Department

Department of Zoology was established in 1964 as an undergraduate department with Dr. V.N. Chakraborty as founder Head of the department. Later the department was upgraded to PG department in the year 1996 under self finance scheme. Department was also approved for research in the year 1987.

Department has approved faculty strength of 06 Assistant Professors (for UG) and 02 (for PG). Besides this the total number of supporting staff as lab assistant and lab bearer is 05. Presently department has total 06 faculty members and 05 supporting staff.

All the faculty members are PhD/ NET, GATE etc. and with specialization in varied fields with average teaching experience of more than 10 years.

Department offers a 3 years (regular) B.Sc. and 2 years (regular) M.Sc. course in Zoology with specialization in Fish and Fisheries. Admissions to these courses are made through the common college admission procedure.

Department has well equipped departmental library for M.Sc. students and faculty members with over 500 books that includes text and review books. Besides this college central library also supplements and cater to the needs of students for text books.

Laboratories for B.Sc. and M.Sc. are well equipped with facilities required to conduct all prescribed practicals for above classes. Department has rich museum with variety of animal specimen and permanent slides to give students an account of animal diversity. Department also has a collection of over 100 preserved fishes for M.Sc. (Fish and Fisheries specialization) students. Department also maintains a fish pond, with over 100 fishes, in the college campus for studying in vivo maintenance of local fishes by the students.

Department is well connected with internet and intercom facility. Department also organizes various academic programs, excursion tours etc. to encourage and motivate students towards learning. Teaching in the department is both conventional and by using ICT facilities by teachers as per the requirements.
